Author Wall provides an extensive review of published theory on the 1 g4! opening, and concludes the survey with fifty complete illustrative games. Players often find they can have good results with this weapon, perhaps in part because some opponents believe the move has to be so bad that White's game will automatically fall apart regardless of what is played - a dangerous assumption. Swiss Master Grob played hundreds of correspondence games in which he opened with "The Spike". This experience led to substantial refinement of the theory.

Grob's Attack, also known as the Spike, is characterized by the King Knight Pawn advancing two squares, 1 g2-g4. This opening was pioneered by the Swiss International Master, Henry Grob (1904-1974), who analyzed it extensively and played hundreds of games beginning with 1 g4.
One of the first to play this unusual opening was Carl Ahlhausen (1835-92) of Berlin. Earlier references called 1 g4 Ahlhausen's Opening. Saviely Tartakower (1887-1956) sometimes chose this opening in simultaneous exhibitions and called it the Genoa or San Pier D'Arena Opening, after the city and suburb of Genoa where he first employed this opening. In Czechoslovakia the opening is called Fric's Opening and other parts of the world it is called Kolibri's Opening.
Today the opening is part of the repertoire of International Masters Michael Basman (ELO 2385) and Spiros Skembris (ELO 2415), and FIDE Master Gerard Welling (ELO 2355). Many ideas have been tested in correspondence play as well, especially by the American Claude Bloodgood.
This unusual and unorthodox opening contains many tactical traps and good attacking chances for both sides. White develops in a hypermodern style while preparing the Bishop to control the long h1-a8 diagonal. The capture of the g4 pawn leads to a trappy game with quick development for White and threats against Black's Queen Knight file.
The book is arranged similar to the opening classification of the Encyclopedia of Chess Openings (ECO). A collection of 50 games is included to supplement the variations.
