The Barcza-Larsen Defense (1 e4 e6 2 d4 c5) is an excellent choice for the player of the Black pieces who enjoys exploring less-traveled roads in the openings. Although many grandmasters (including Kasparov) have employed the Barcza-Larsen on occasion, this defense has never been subjected to the microscopic scrutiny accorded many other openings. This monograph brings together, for the first time, a substantial number of games demonstrating the various strategies relevant to this interesting system.
National Master Paul Fields has been a consistent exponent of unorthodox opening systems during his eighteen years of tournament practice.

This games collection is designed for the player of the Black pieces who enjoys exploring less-traveled roads in the openings. Although many famous grandmasters will be found defending the Barcza-Larsen in the pages that follow, this defense has never been studied with the microscopic attention accorded many other opening variations. There are no comprehensive works or specialized monographs available; this collection represents an attempt to bring together, for the first time, a substantial number of games demonstrating the various strategies relevant to this system. It is the author's hope that study of this material will provide both aesthetic enjoyment as well as tournament points.
No one can claim only personal credit for producing a new book, and that is certainly the case with the present volume. Besides mentioning the many wonderful players whose efforts form the basis for this work, I would particularly like to thank Dr. Alice N. Loranth and Dr. Motoko B. Reece of the Cleveland Public Library, Special Collections, John G. White Chess Collection. Without their kind assistance, and that of their staff, this book would not have been written. And, as Dr. Reece thoughtfully pointed out, without the generosity of Mr. John G. White, a great patron of chess, much of this material would have remained inaccessible. My thanks to them, and, finally, to my dear wife Karen, whose encouragement helped make this possible.
