The Chess Weekly / Volume I - 1908
edited by W. E. Napier
203 Seiten, Leinen, Reprint, Caissa 90-Olomouc, 2004, original erschienen 1908
THIS the initial number of the chess weekly is sent forth with the hope that it will make friends, and with the avowed purpose, for the future, of deserving the favor and esteem of its patrons.
We do not entertain any flattering vision of quickly gotten wealth; but if we succeed in breathing the breath of life into a chess chronicle of enduring merit and usefulness, we shall not have labored in vainthe more especially so if our well-wishers do not withhold those visible means of support which conduce to a long life and a merry one.
We, in our time, have attended the last sad rites of many a worthy chess journal; and though sufficiently apprised of the ills besetting such enterprises, we nevertheless feel sure that a weekly chess paper, actually and with conscience fulfilling its promise of exellence and punctuality, will command the respect and encouragement of the chess playing public.
