Ein Crash-Kurs des Schachspiels, von Notation und Regelkunde bis zu Elo 2.000 am Ende des Buches (schön wär's!). Didaktisch fragwürdig m.E. der Ansatz, Grundlagenwissen wie Fesselung, Abzugsschach, Bauernumwandlung usw. anhand der Partien von Weltmeistern und ähnlich großen Tieren zu illustrieren. Ein Kapitel "How to Beat Your Home Computer" gibt zwar Basisinformation über Computerschach, hält jedoch nicht, was es verspricht.
Nicht erst seit dem von der Londoner Zeitung mitorganisierten WM-Match Kasparow-Short schwimmt "The Times" auf der Schachwelle. GM Keene ist Redakteur der dortigen Schachspalte, und für seine Leserschar in "The Times" ist das Buch wohl gedacht. Sicherlich ist lobenswert, wenn in Zusammenarbeit mit einem renommierten Tagblatt versucht wird, das Schachspiel zu popularisieren. Für unseren Leserkreis jedoch dürfte das Buch eher uninteressant sein, zumal sich in deutscher Sprache Besseres findet.
