The Best of the Best

Vladimir Kramnik achieved one of the best performances of his career at the Turin Olympiad, where he scored the top first board result. The game he won against Bruzon, played in a combinatory style, was selected as the best game of Informant 97, ahead of the game Rublevsky Mamedyarov by a margin of three points.
We will soon be releasing a new CD, The Best of Chess Informant Vladimir Kramnik, and, as an introduction to Kramnik’s creative output, I would like to present my foreword from the CD.
"A while ago, back then in 1989, the editorial work on Chess Informant 47 was in full swing. As many times before, a large shipment from Moscow had just arrived with contributions from Soviet players. Among the heaps of material, a notebook with many annotated games caught the eye of our Editorial Board. The games were neatly handwritten, which obviously took a lot of time and patience. Fourteen-year-old elementary school pupil who wrote that was none other than today's World Champion; we could hardly imagine at the time that the future would bring regular worldwide e-mailing service.
As one of the most talented juniors he was awarded an early admittance into the famous Botvinnik's school for gifted young players. Mikhail Moiseevich insisted upon absolute commitment to the analytical work, based on his firm belief that one can benefit most from thorough understanding of his own games. Apart from his extraordinary gift, probably most of Kramnik's fundamentals stem from this school.

I first met Vladimir Kramnik at the Dortmund tournament in 1992. With his brilliant performance in the Open tournament and subsequent meteoric rise, he announced his entrance into the elite of world chess. A few months later he won his gold medal as first reserve for the Russian team in the Manila Olympiad. Later that year he became a Grandmaster, which was a mere formality, as he was obviously destined for greatness. Nowadays, Dortmund is one of his favorite venues, as he managed to conquer it seven times so far.
For Chess Informant's 35th anniversary, Kramnik wrote: "Chess Informant has had great importance and influence to the development of world chess. As for me, I have always been cooperating with Chess Informant and eagerly expecting appearance of every new volume." In a month or so the work on Informant 99 shall enter the final phase. To my great satisfaction, Vladimir's annotated games from Wijk aan Zee and Monaco have already arrived. It is my sincere hope that this CD, which covers his creative opus, will contribute to the development of many young generations to come."

Die Partien oder Stellungen sind ausführlich im Informator Stil kommentiert (also ohne Text oder Erläuterungen, nur in Variantenform mit Symbolbewerund verweisen auf theoretisch bedeutsame andere Partien.
Das Nachspielen dürfte für schwächere Spieler nicht ganz einfach sein, zuwohl auch ein gutes Maß an Theoriekenntnis vorauszusetzen ist. StärkeSpieler können jedoch den Stoff am Computer sehr gut studieren und eigeAnalysen anstellen oder sich dementsprechend die schwierigen Passagen „verklickern".
Wie üblich bringt der Verlag die Daten als Chessbase-, PGN- und Chess Asso daß alle Schachfreunde die CD problemlos verwenden können. Erstbenutzer von Produkten des Verlages müssen zuerst das ProChess Informant Expert installieren, danach folgt das set up der CD. Dazu muß ein mitgelieferter Code eingegeben werden.
Empfehlenswert für alle, die sich mit einem der besten Spieler der Welt näbefassen und/oder seine Theorie und Technik studieren wollen.

Im Jahre 1992 fand das bis dahin stärkste Schachturnier auf deutschem Boden statt. Genauer gesagt in Dortmund, und genau dorthin machte ich mich mit noch zwei weiteren Schachverrückten auf um die Elite des internationalen Schachs einmal live zu erleben. Im Hauptturnier spielten damals Kasparow, Anand, Kamsky, Iwantschuk und weitere Supergroßmeister. Es war ziemlich beeindruckend, alles was Rang und Namen hatte, war damals in Dortmund vertreten, im Foyer analysierten zum Beispiel Helmut Pfleger und Vlastimil Hort vor großem Publikum die laufenden Partien, wohin man blickte, überall bekannte Schachgrößen. Unten im Keller wurde das Qualifikationsturnier (Open A, B und C) ausgetragen und war für mich persönlich natürlich nicht so interessant im Hinblick auf Kasparow und Co. Im A-Open saß an Brett 1 ein titelloser 17-jähriger Russe der jeden seiner Gegner in Grund und Boden spielte, am Anfang kaum beachtet, zum Ende hin hatte sich bei seinen Partien eine dichte Menschentraube rings um das Brett gebildet. Damals klärte mich ein Schachfreund hinsichtlich dieses Nobodys auf. „Den kennst du nicht? Das ist Kramnik, angeblich ein Riesentalent!” „Na ja, hat ja schon viele solcher angeblichen Talente gegeben”, antwortete ich und ging wieder hinauf ins Hauptturnier, wo Kasparow gerade den Engländer Adams ausdrückte wie eine Zitrone. Kramnik gewann später das A-Open in glänzendem Stil und qualifizierte sich für das nächste Superturnier (wo er den geteilten 2-3 Platz einnehmen konnte). Damit begann der kometenhafte Aufstieg eines Schachgenies der Kasparow das fürchten lehren sollte.

In der Informatorreihe „The Best of Chess Informant” erschienen bisher Biographien über Anatoli Karpow und Garri Kasparow. In der neuesten Ausgabe wird nun Schachweltmeister Wladimir Kramnik ausführlich vorgestellt und sein bisheriges schachliches Output unter die Lupe genommen.
Zum Einstieg werden dem Leser die wichtigsten biographischen Daten über Kramnik und dessen bisherige Turniererfolge in übersichtlicher Form dargeboten. Von den 843 auf der CD enthaltenen Partien sind 391 vom Meister selbst kommentiert. Diese Partien sind auch Grundlage für umfangreiche Statistiken sowie Repertoirebäume mit Schwarz und Weiß. Im Kapitel Creativity werden die 100 besten Partien Kramniks vorgestellt, seine wichtigsten theoretischen Neuerungen und seine 5 „golden games”, darunter findet sich auch folgende historisch wichtige Partie:

Im Kapitel ”Play like Kramnik“ kann der Leser an ausgewählten Kombinationen, exzellenten Zügen, Endspielen usw. versuchen, es Kramnik gleich zu tun. Als Beigabe gibt es noch 3 „theoretical surveys”(C 42, D 85, E 04), bearbeitet von IM S. Velickovic, IM Z. Krnic und IM S. Cvetkovic. Der Inhalt der CD kann durch die 4 mitgelieferten Formate Chess Informant Expert, PGN, ChessBase oder Chess Assistant betrachtet werden.
Fazit:
”The Best of Chess Informant - Vladimir Kramnik“ stellt einen der besten Spieler aller Zeiten ausführlich mit vielen Details vor. Die Präsentation und Qualität des dargebotenen Materials wird vielen Schachfreunden das Herz höher schlagen lassen!
