In 1851 Josef Kling (1811 - 1876) and Bernhard Horwitz (1808 - 1885) published Chess Studies, or endings of games - containing upwards of two hundred scientific examples of chess strategy. It was a sensational word, for all the time there existed no systematic handbooks on the end-game.
In 1884 Horwitz brought out Chess Studies and End-Games, a book containing 427 positions. Among these were all the studies from the 1851 edition, together with over 50 others composed jointly with Kling. Horwitz, however, did not mention Kling's name, and even prepared the whole manuscript by hand to conceal the co-authorship.
The present reprint is of the second (posthumous) edition of 1889, which incorporated corrections made by Rev. William Wayte (see the Errata, to which it should be added that the study on page 166 is simply solved by 1 K-Q6) and repaired the injustice by acknowledging Kling's Participation.
