This book is a true rarity, one with original insight into the authentic principles of the ancient game of chess. There have been more books written on chess than any other game. Most are merely a synthesis of previously known ideas. In this work, Master Dan Heisman has condensed his lifelong study of the real elements of chess analysis into a manual designed to impart understanding how to analyze chess positions. This book reveals the errors in theory which lead players to make improper decisions, particularly those which rely upon traditional "chess maxims". This book is essential reading for every serious player, but especially crucial for those who teach chess. The reader will come away with a much better understanding of the real elements of strengths and weaknesses on the chess board. This third edition has been revised to make it even easier to absorb the concepts and apply them to your game.
Elements of Positional Evaluation: How Chess Pieces Get Their Power is an attempt to provide an entirely new perspective on chess evaluation theory. Much of the proposed theory has been derived from the author's experience as a chess teacher. The theory should provide new insights into chess annotation, teaching, and quiescent position evaluation for chess computer algorithms.
There are two main tasks: to show deficiencies in the current evaluation chess theory and to propose a better, more exception-free theory. I hope Elements of Positional Evaluation accomplishes these in a manner that is educational, instructive, correct and, even in some cases, entertaining.
I wish to thank Richard Pariseau, Jerry Kolker, and Donald Byrne for giving me an open chess mind and contributing greatly to giving me a feel for the game. Thanks to Grandmasters Steinitz, Tarrasch, Ninzovitch, Alekhine, Botvinnik, and Euwe, whose works and games have contributed so much to the development of current evaluation theory.
