The opening move 1 b3 leads to one of the most interesting systems available to the tournament player. It is a useful surprise weapon which has been tested in top level tournament play. This book surveys the available theoretical material and provides fifty example games for a well-rounded exposition of the current theory.

Larsen's Opening, also known as the Queen's Fianchetto, Baby-Orangutan, and Danish Opening, is a hypermodern attempt to control the center through control of the a1-h8 diagonal. White avoids committing the central pawns too early. The opening avoids prepared theoretical variations much analyzed in modern opening theory. However, Larsen's Opening is flexible enough to transpose into the Reti, English, Bird, Dutch, Catalan, King's Indian Attack, King's Indian Defense, Queen's Indian Defense, Queen's Gambit, Sicilian Defense, French Defense, or the Caro Kann.
The move was first mentioned by Lucena in 1497. The Reverends John Owen and A.D. Skipworth adopted it in the 19th century. Nimzovich revised it through transposition in the 20th century. In recent years it has become one of the more popular of the irregular openings.
The Danish grandmaster Bent Larsen has been the leading player to adopt this opening. It has been part of his opening repertoire for many years. Other grandmasters who have played the Larsen's Opening with success include Bobby Fischer, Tigran Petrosian, Vassily Smyslov, Ulf Andersson, Lubomir Ljubojevic, Mark Taimanov, and Jan Timman.
It is the task of this book to bring together the practical variations and games beginning with 1 b3. The book is arranged similar to the opening classification of the Encyclopedia of Chess Openings (ECO), with the lesser-known variations analyzed first and leading to the more common variations. A collection of 50 games is included to supplement the variations.
