Gary Lane is an International Master and an experienced and successful player on the international tournament circuit. He qualified to compete at the World Cup in 2005 and is a former Commonwealth Champion. I have made sure in the vast majority of games that good players have suffered losses in the lines given. This is because if experienced tournament campaigners fall victim to the tactics then just about anyone else will too. I also found it importo choose lines that, should the trap be spotted, one can carry on without fear of having a worse position. Indeed, I have occasionally added a game or two to help create a mini opening repertoire for those who wish to play and win.
Finally, I have added a section on Classic Attacks to make sure that improving players are aware of some common, winning ideas and how to apply them.
A Shortcut to Success
I have included a number of my favourite traps because they keep on winning games. The assumption is that the reader may not be familiar with some old fa- ones that are well known to someone who has played chess all his life, but certainly not to those new to the game. It is in effect a shortcut to success by acquiring a vast amount of knowledge about traps.
This became clear recently at a national junior event where my pupil won a piece in the opening. I consoled the opponent afterwards by pointing out that it came from the game Petrosian-Ree, Wijk aan Zee 1971. The teenager carefully replied: "I wasn't even born then and I am not sure if my dad was as well." This is the reason why it is worth knowing some key tricks and traps that masters take for granted.

Bei diesem Buch handelt es sich um eine Sammlung von Eröffnungsfallen, Eröffnungstricks und einigen typischen Mittelspielangriffen. Ähnlich wie bei vergleichbaren Werken beschränken sich die Eröffnungsfallen auf Kurzschlüsse und grobe Patzer einer der Parteien. Die vorhandene Auswahl ist natürlich rein subjektiv und entspricht dem Geschmack des Autors, ob der Leser genauso viel Gefallen daran findet möchte ich doch bezweifeln. Gary Lane bemüht in seinem Werk doch arg viel Altbekanntes, manches wirkt gar peinlich. Die Originalität des Buches verliert sich irgendwo zwischen den Seiten, die Trivialität gewinnt die Oberhand und so wundert es nicht, dass zum Beispiel 1.e4 c5 2.b4 cxb4 3.a3 d5 4.exd5 Dxd5 5.axb4?? De5 0-1 als Anti-Wing Gambit auf fast drei Seiten präsentiert wird. Holländisch wird mit dem alten Kortschnoi-Trick 1.d4 f5 2.h3 Sf6 3.g4 hxg4 4.hxg4 Sxg4 5.Dd3 Sf6? 6.Txh7! bekämpft und kann erfahrenen Turnierspielern höchstwahrscheinlich nur ein müdes gequältes Lächeln entlocken. Auch liebevollste Kommentierung der Partien kann nicht darüber hinwegtäuschen, dass die gezeigten Beispiele für einen Vereinsspieler höchst ermüdend sind, blutige Anfänger kann der Autor damit vielleicht gerade noch in Staunen versetzen. Die typischen Mittelspielangriffe bestehen aus dem klassischen Läuferopfer auf h7, hierbei spricht der Autor vom „griechischen Gift” (?!?). Daneben werden noch diverse andere Mattwendungen wiederholt, Arabermatt, Morphy´s Matt, usw.
Fazit:
Für Anfänger vielleicht ganz nett. Vergleichbare und bessere Literatur gibt es zur Genüge und deshalb wird es dieses Buch meiner Meinung nach sehr schwer haben.
