Author W. John Lutes has given us another of his brilliant opening research products. In this instance he treats a current variation of the Sicilian Defense, the O'Kelly Variation. In the introduction he has written an extensive history of the development of the opening, so that the reader and player can appreciate the original ideas as they developed. Then in an exhaustive treatment of the O'Kelly Variation he provides 390 columns of games and analysis, in what is truly a complete monograph on this line of play. Like all variations in the Sicilian Defense, there are numerous transpositions into other variations. The author notes these carefully, but does not extend the analysis into such variations so as to keep the book within reasonable limits. This book is a "must have" for the serious student of the game.
This book is a theoretical and analytical examination (based totally upon master and grandmaster play) of one of the most interesting modern lines in the defense, 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 a6; known as the O'Kelly Variation.
Although named for the late brilliant Belgian theorist and grandmaster, Alberic O'Kelly de Galway (b. 1911, d. 1980); who began adopting the continuation at the end of World War II, the move was actually first adopted by Dr. Savielly Grigorievich Tartakower (b. 1887, d. 1956) in his match with Richard Reti at Vienna in 1919 and again, in a match at Vienna, against Rudolf Spielmann in 1921.
It is quite true that there have been innumerable books and articles written on the Sicilian Defense, but often the interested player must consult hundreds of texts in order to obtain an accurate picture of this particular opening variation. The author has therefore compiled many of these lines, added the comments from the world's most noted authorities, both past and present; with their earliest and latest analyses and games, to produce a reference tool for the correspondence or tournament player.
A history of the Sicilian Defense, since its conception in the late sixteeth century, is also included so that the reader will be able to examine the progressive lines of play adopted by both sides in the past four hundred years.
