The 1985 Manhattan International was a FIDE Category 10 strength event. One has to go all the way back to San Antonio 1972 to find a stronger U. S. international event. IM Taylor has written more than a routine tournament book; he has fashioned an instructive book in the mold of the classic New York 1924 by Alekhine. The deeply annotated games feature discussion of opening theory, middlegame and endgame strategies, and the happenings in a modern tournament as the players vie for prizes, honors, and FIDE titles. The tournament featured a number of rising American chess stars and the 16-year-old Zsuzsa Polgar, highest rated player of her age in the world.

"You're awfully brave - you're dumb, but you're awfully brave." Aileen DeMoulin Chellstorp, in conversation with the author.
My younger daughter's Godmother was not speaking of this book when she summed up my character so neatly, but she might just as well have been. It takes a unique combination of attributes to write a book about an event in which the author finished last - and then deliberately invites comparison with Alexander Alekhine's masterpiece. New York 1924.
Yet I learned a great deal from writing this book - if I am a fool then we are all fools at one time or another. No player on the stage is exempt from mistakes.
I also learned that to win a tournament like this is not a matter of luck. Play over all 45 games in this volume - and there is no way to escape the conclusion that GM Lobron played the best chess. Turn to the crosstable - and you will find his name at the top of the list.
Without further ado then, let me go to the games. I hope you enjoy them.
