22.676 Partien gespielt zwischen Februar bis April 2018. Für Adrian Mikhalchishin ist Grünfeld-Indisch die zur Zeit schwierigste Eröffnung im modernen Schach. Oft kommen komplizierte Stellungen aufs Brett und Schwarz erreicht sein erstes Ziel: Gegenspiel zu erhalten. Für Weiß stellt sich die Frage, ob er Hauptvarianten spielt oder lieber gut vorbereitet zu einer aussichtsreichen Nebenvariante greift. Noch eine andere Möglichkeit besteht in der Wahl einer klassischen Spielweise. Die Variante mit dem Fianchetto und frühem e4 geht auf Rubinstein zurück, aber wie das Partiebeispiel unseres ukrainischen Toptrainers belegt, hat dieser Aufbau seine Giftigkeit nicht verloren.
In Wijk aan Zee konnte man nicht ahnen, wie souverän Fabiano Caruana beim Kandidatenturnier agieren würde. Vor allem war noch nicht klar, welche Rolle die Russische Eröffnung dabei spielen würde: In Wijk -1, aber in Berlin +1. Yannick Pelletier hat die Partie Anand-Caruana, Wijk aan Zee 2018, untersucht. Da überzeugte der Inder mit einem recht klaren Sieg, aber eigentlich kam Caruana ganz gut aus der Eröffnung heraus.
Es ist schon eine gute Tradition, dass in der deutschen Bundesliga die Partie der Saison gewählt wird. Für 2013/14 ging die Auszeichnung an Meinhardt-Firman. In einem Sizilianer stellt Schwarz die Entwicklung seines g-Springers sehr lange zurück. Damit bleibt auch der König in der Mitte und das wird von Weiß vorbildlich ausgenutzt. Georgios Souleidis hat die Partie kommentiert und sieht vor allem das schöne Finale als Grund für die Wahl der Leser.

Complicated positions often appear on the board and Black achieves his first goal: obtaining counterplay. For White, the question is whether to play main lines or whether to prefer turning to a promising sub-variation which he has prepared thoroughly. Yet another option consists of the choice of a classical plan.
