This is the first book about go to be translated from French into English. Les Bases Techniques du Go was published by Eugene Lim in 1974, and it is not unreasonable to say that modern amateur go exists in France almost solely due to Eugene Lim's efforts to popularize the game.
The book focuses on basic techniques in the context of nine stone games, but these patterns appear in even games as well. Mastering them will facilitate rapid progress for beginners and reviewing them will fill in gaps in the understanding of stronger players. There is also a section on how to play aggressively, which is essential for becoming a strong player. Two final chapters examine the trick plays and mystifying moves stronger players use to confuse weaker opponents.
