The annual congress of the International Chess Federation opened at Folkestone on the afternoon of June 12 th, when the fourth contest for the Hamilton-Russell Cup for national teams was the principal event.

The Team Tournament and the Women`s Championship were both played in the fine rooms of the Leas Cliff Hall, while the other events were at the Town Hall. At both halls affairs began soon after 2 p.m., the Mayor of Folkestone being at the Leas Cliff Hall and the Deputy Mayor at the Town Hall, to welcome players and visitors. The official reception having been fixed for the afternoon of the following day, preliminary proceedings were brief on Monday, and Canon Gordon Ross, President of the British Chess Federation, was able to declare the congress open in good time.

Of the 18 entries (to the Team Tournament) on the official programme, Spain and Argentina were unfortunately obliged to scratch; and the Estonian team did not put in an appearance. BCM July 1933
