The Milton Work Point-Count Method (ace=4; king=3; queen=3; jack=2) is a long-established tool for evaluating a hand. However, it is only a rough-and-ready guide which should not be used slavishly. The location of high cards, and, of course, the distribution, is a major factor and two combined hands totalling 20 points might produce a slam, while two other totalling 30 points might have no play for game.
Judging the quality of your points is a difficult area, but the author, and experienced International who is both a professional player and writer, presents a number of ground rules which should improve your bidding judgement.
