Introduction

These commentaries on three pro games by Yuan Zhou are extraordinarily thorough - virtually every move is commented on. Zhou discusses both the particular issues involved in each move and also the general principles of play reflected in them. It is commonly said that studying pro games is a good way to learn to play go well but for weaker players it is too difficult to figure out what is going on for this advice to be very useful. Moreover, virtually all commentaries on pro games only comment on a small percentage of the moves in the games. The commentaries Zhou has published in other books are noticeably more thorough than the usual commentaries available for study, but the commentaries in the Deep Thought books, of which this is the second volume in print, go well beyond even his usual efforts.
Virtually every diagram in the book shows only one new move. One advantage of this is that it vastly increases the opportunities for the reader to consider what the next move should be. Thinking about the game in this way while going through the commentary is the best way by far to improve your own skill in the game. To encourage you to do that, Zhou sometimes ends the comments on a particular move with a question along the lines of "How would you play next?" Reading the commentaries in this sort of manner takes more time, but it will have the benefit of maximizing the benefit you get from working through the book. In effeec these commentaries are a series of unusually helpful problems. Their advantage is that they require you to consider the whole board and not only local tactics the way the typical problem book does.

The included games are considered unusually well played and are popular for study for that reason.

Zhou has a particular talent for helping weaker players understand what is going on in pro games and guiding them to become stronger players by studying pro games. He intentionally includes kyu players in his intended audience, not just stronger players. Zhou is a popular teacher with many students.
