Dynamic Black Opening Repertoire
160 pages, paperback, Batsford Chess, 2003
Discontinued
The author offers exciting opening systems to deal with all White opening moves. The accent here is not on defence but on counterattack!
Black players are advised to meet the King's Pawn Opening, 1 e4 with 1...e5 and to adopt a confident, fearless approach when faced with 'Romantic' openings such as the King's Gambit as well as the more strategical Ruy Lopez 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5 - against which the daring Schliemann Counter Gambit, 3...f5, is recommended. A similarly bold approach is suggested against the Queen's Pawn Opening where Black is advised to meet 1 d4 with 1.. Nf6 2 c4 c5 3 d5 b5 - the Benko Gambit, which provides ample opportunities for seizing an early initiative.
If White aims for a long-term positional game by 1 c4, the prescribed antidote is 1...e5 followed by 2...f5. Finally, aggressive retorts to the Trompowsky, Reti, Polish, Grob, Bird's, etc, are offered. A complete opening repertoire designed for competitive club players with a positive attitude!
Chris Baker is an international master. He is the author of several chess books, including Learn from your Chess Mistakes for Batsford, and contributes a very popular monthly column to the international magazine Chess. He specializes in writing for players of club level.
