IM's Donaldson and Silman are completing a series of volumes on the Slav Defense which will cover the opening in unprecedented detail, as well as bringing previous work up to date. This first volume to appear presents a number of gambit lines, including the Winawer and Slav Gambits. The first is one of today's hottest variations! The authors present evaluations, compete games, and substantial original analysis. All in all, an important contribution to opening analysis for every serious student of chess.

Though several books on the Slav Defense have already been written, most are hopelessly out of date or are simply inadequate for the serious minded professional. This little book is the second of a projected five book series that will cover the Slav Defense in unsurpassed depth. We have tried very hard to include every important game on the lines being discussed and have also made an attempt to present lots of original analysis plus summations of the ultimate worth of various lines. We have also added dozens of complete games with the text so that the reader will be spared the bother of having to turn to an unrelated page in order to find the games section.
Note that the first two lines examined in our series are 'the Slav and Winawer Gambits. The Slav Gambit was once quite popular but is now seen less and less frequently in top events due to recent developments in Black's favor.
The Winawer Gambit, on the other hand, was always considered to be an unimportant sideline until Grandmasters such as Jonny Hector, Shabalov, Bagirov, P.Nikolic, Salov, Bareev, and Gelfand took it up and showed it's true potential. Now it's one of theory's hottest variations.
We would like to apologize to the reader for the enormous amount of variations and sub-variations. Due to this we have some lines designated with super long monsters like D.3.l.2.b.3.b.2.a.! However, this is justified by the fact that we wanted to break the lines down so they could be better understood and followed. The Index Of Variations at the end of the book should act like a map and enable anyone to find any particular move or piece of analysis that interests them.
As always, send all criticisms, improvements, interesting Slav Defense games, or questions to the publisher and they will find their way to us.
