Comments On This Book

I doubt if you're ever going to find a chess book like this again: it's part instruction, part exploration and part polemic.
The authors are, indeed, searching for Zugzwang, or rather, for true Zugzwang. But they also want to make a point that much of what's been written about it is just plain wrong.
Most players, masters as well as amateurs, don't take much notice of the difference between Zugzwang and the impostor the authors call a "Squeeze". In fact, you could argue the world is divided into two groups of players - those who haven't a clue as to what Zugzwang is and those who do and get it wrong.
If you enjoy endgames as an art form - or just tolerate them as the necessary way that chess games finish - you should find a lot to think about in this book. If nothing else, the authors have given us a useful new symbol for Squeeze. All in all, a job well done.
