The Latvian Gambit - 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 f5 - was once called the Greco Counter Gambit under the impression that it should be attributed to Greco from 1590, but it had been documented 60 years earlier. A group of masters in Riga revived the opening with thorough analysis and practice and the name now recognizes their significant contributions to making this a very playable opening weapon. The coauthors of this book has eliminated inferior lines to provide guidance to the reader as to the very best lines, and thus reduce learning effort. A collection of more than one hundred games gives the player clear illustration of the methods of continuing the recommended variations of this exciting opening.

This book makes the gambit easy by selecting one line of play only for the Black player, thus avoiding many of the complex, often obsolete variations. Thus for a player who is looking for a highly tactical defense to 1 e4, this will be easy to learn.
For the experienced Latvian gambit player this book will summarize the currently theoretically soundest variations.
The Latvian Gambit "refuted"?
ICCF GM Morgado of Argentina, who has attained a second place in an ICCF world championship tourney, is a leading Latvian gambit expert. He has played in many double round Latvian Gambit Correspondence Chess tournaments. If this player could not refute the gambit when playing with the White pieces, then be assured that nobody can!
Paul Keres, the late Estonian GM, had this to say: "Experience shows that despite first impressions, the Latvian Gambit is hard to refute and in many instances Black obtains good attacking chances."

This Gambit...
This Gambit has been around for a few centuries and it earlier carried the name GRECO COUNTER GAMBIT. Then, around 1900, a group of Riga players, led by K. Betins, brought the Gambit up to modern standards. The leading practitioners were Betins, Mattisons, V. Petrovs, and Nimzovich, but players like Keres and Spassky also tried it.
