"Chess Middlegames" nennt der bekannte und erfahrene Autor Yuri Averbakh sein jüngstes Buch über das Mittelspiel. Es soll das "wesentliche Wissen" über die Phase der Schachpartie vermitteln, die dem Endspiel vorangeht und somit die für die Schlußphase einer Partie entscheidende Phase. Über das Mittelspiel gibt es weniger Lehr- und Lernmaterial als über die beiden anderen Phasen, Eröffnung und Endspiel. Das allein wäre Grund genug, sich mit dem Mittelspiel gründlicher zu befassen.
Es handelt sich um ein Thema, über das einerseits wenig Material angeboten wird, weil es sich um schwierige und überdies schwer abgrenzbare Materialien handelt und zum anderen gar nicht so leicht zu vermitteln ist.
Averbakh hat den Vorzug, aus seiner Erfahrung schöpfen zu können. Großer Eifer im Turnierschach und ebensolcher Fleiß im Theoriestudium haben ihn zu einem der bedeutendsten Autoren der internationalen Schachliteratur gemacht.
