Introduction
Chess players spend a great deal of their study time preparing defenses to 1.e4 and 1.d4, but when they meet a flank opening they are usually unprepared. This book has been written to fill this void. Based partially on the repertoire of Bobby Fischer, defenses to 1.c4, 1.Nf3, 1.f4, 1.b3, and 1.b4 are given. This book is a compilation of important games from past and present, current through Informant 59. In many variations, the positional themes and plans are more important than actual move orders. The reader should never memorize all the analysis, rather should use it as a reference. Most importantly there is a large selection of annotated games. Former World Champion Tigran Petrosian has written that the best and perhaps the only road to the mastery of chess is the study of the games of the masters. Opening preparation should not displace the study of strategy and sharpening of tactical ability.
A quote of Savielly Tartakower should be remembered: "The real battle begins only in the middlegame." The middlegame is usually the battlefield where the game is decided by unaided skill. This book was written to help the reader reach a playable middlegame position and to become a more successful tournament player.
