In der Reihe "Batsford Chess Openings" gibt es neben den Büchern über das "Wolga-Gambit" und "Sveshnikov" auch ein neues Buch über eine wichtige Hauptvariante der französischen Verteidigung, die nach 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Sc3 Sf6 4. Lg5 Le7 5. e5 Sfd7 entsteht.
Man sollte sich dabei nicht von der etwas dunklen Gestaltung dieser Bücher täuschen lassen, denn inhaltlich sind sie sehr gelungen.
In Teil 1 von "The Classical French" wird das klassische Abspiel nach 6. Lxe7 Dxe7 besprochen, in Teil 2 folgt die Analyse des Aljechin-Chatard-Gambits (6. h4). Der abschließende dritte Teil enthält 30 gut kommentierte Beispielpartien. Sehr erfreulich ist die durchgehend verbale und sehr ausführliche Kommentierung der Varianten.
Kurzum: Wer sich eingehend mit dieser Variante beschäftigen möchte, kommt an diesem Buch wohl kaum vorbei.
