Oops! He’s Back!
Australian Grandmaster Ian Rogers is back with a new book of silly resignation puzzles - the only chess puzzle book where your solution cannot be worse than the player who mistakenly abandoned the game!
Pit your wits against legends from yesteryear to today, from Anderssen to Korchnoi to Gelfand, knowing that they resigned their games unnecessarily and you, perhaps, could have found a way out.
Oops! I Resigned One More Time! is the sequel to Oops! I Resigned Again!, which has gained a cult following since its release in 2021. Marvel again at 100 extraordinary positions and the stories behind them, in themed sets of five, with sneaking a peek at the answers made easy.

Never give up!
Oops! I Resigned One More Time! is a quite unusual puzzle book, but extremely entertaining. Altogether there are 100 puzzles, five in each of the book’s twenty chapters, and arranged (within each chapter) in order of difficulty, the first one being the easiest.

Each position is taken from a game where one of the players resigned unnecessarily, accepting defeat when they could have drawn or even won by best play. As I write, Wesley So, one of the best players in the world, has been eliminated from the FIDE World Cup 2025 after he resigned in an equal position in his match against Titas Stremavicius, so it can happen to anyone. The puzzle, simply, is to find the moves that would have avoided defeat. The positions are, I would say, intrinsically difficult, since they have defeated at least one good player in the past. You will not be surprised to learn that there are many hidden (indeed, spectacular) resources herein.

While the chapter titles owe something to pop song lyrics, with ‘The Winner Takes It All’ and ‘Now I’ve Gone And Thrown It All Away’ being two delicious examples, the positions are not grouped by theme. Rather, variety is the watchword: each chapter has a bit of everything, endings and middlegames both. This adds to the difficulty, since you don’t know quite what to expect. Nonetheless, there are certain affinities. If you compare puzzle 2 in chapter 6 with puzzle 3 in chapter 12, for example, you will see a similarity.

One thing I especially enjoyed about the book was Ian Rogers’s actual writing, his introduction to each position, the way he sets each game in context and goes on to say something as well about the players involved. Plainly, Rogers has done an immense amount of research. His intention, also, is to tell a story, so that we don’t laugh at the fateful decision to fall on the sword, but rather sympathise with an all too human error that we ourselves might have made. The outcome of the game, a prize opportunity missed, is simply the final twist in the tale. Certain of Rogers’s descriptions and expositions made me think of the writings of Kurt Richter, as featured in Chess Combination as a Fine Art, and I would place Ian Rogers on a par with the great German Maestro.

Oops! I Resigned One More Time! is an absorbing and pleasant read, diverting and instructive in equal measure. The morale is clear: never give up!
