Opening Leads in Bridge

The opening lead is often the most crucial of the 52 cards played in any hand, and often the success or failure of a contract depends on it. However, the opening leader has less information to go on, being able to see only his own hand when making the choice. The additional information which must be used to indicate the choice of lead is the auction, which invariably gives extra clues from both - the calls that were made and the calls that were not.
Top author Tony Sowter takes the reader through the thought processes which the opening leader should go through; the questions he needs to ask; the degree of risk he needs to take. Have they struggled to their contract? Do the cards seem to lie well for them? Have they discovered a good trump fit? What do I need partner to have to beat this contract? These and many similar questions can, with practice, be answered by the average player.
Tony Sowter is the editor and publisher of the world-renowned magazine International Popular Bridge Monthly and author of over 20 books on bridge. He was European Champion in 1991 and has been a regular English International.
