Author's Preface
As always it is a pleasure to collaborate with Dale Brandreth on one of his titles in the field of chess history. As a boy I rued the fact that I could not get scores (much less notes) for most of the games played at Pasadena. With Dale's efforts and those of a number of other dedicated researchers we can now publish a book with fifty-four scores, at least, and present them with reasonably good commentary.
Future investigations may turn up one or two more games, but it is well to bring out what we have now, especially as a number of readers have asked for an accounting of what has already been found. It is rewarding to help present the results to the chess reading public.
The notes I've provided are a combination of my own efforts, the notes of the participants and contemporary journalists, and the correcting and deepening of all these with today's analysis engines.
Thanks are due to Bruce Monson for his work on the women's tournament and for a number of the photos found herein. I hope to work with Bruce on further projects. I'm also grateful to publisher Brandreth for his usual thoughtful editing and expert guidance.
