Der Autor Steffen Pedersen hat in den letzten Jahren einige bemerkenswerte Eröffnungsbücher geschrieben, zum Beispiel 'The Meran System' und 'Easy Guide to the Sicilian Scheveningen'.

Bei seinem neuesten Werk 'Test Your Chess' handelt es sich um ein Lehrbuch, das dem Leser die Möglichkeit bietet, seine Spielstärke in allen Partiephasen zu überprüfen und zu verbessern.

Kapitel 1 enthält 11 Tests zum Thema Eröffnung (z. B. Ausnutzung eines Entwicklungsvorsprungs), Kapitel 2 bringt 12 Tests zum Mittelspiel (Läuferopfer auf h7, Angriff und Verteidigung) und Kapitel 3 besteht aus 18 Endspiel-Aufgaben (Bauernendspiele, ungleiche Läufer, Turmendspiele, Endspieltechnik).

Die mit vielen Erläuterungen versehenen Lösungen sind in Kapitel 4 zusammengefasst. Wer Spaß an Zahlenspielen hat, kann anhand seiner erreichten Punktzahl feststellen, wie seine Leistung auf der Skala von Gelegenheitsspieler bis Großmeister einzuschätzen ist.

Den Hauptteil des Buches bilden die 16 vollständigen Partien in Kapitel 5. Hier wird der Leser aufgefordert, die Züge eines der beiden Spieler voherzusagen.

Anschließend erfolgt die Bewertung und eine ausführliche Erklärung. Das Ganze erinnert an dieser Stelle sehr stark an 'Wie gut ist Dein Schach' von Daniel King.

Fazit: Die Idee des Buches ist nicht gerade neu, aber die Umsetzung ist sehr gut gelungen. Für ehrgeizige Vereinsspieler mit guten englischen Sprachkenntnissen sehr empfehlenswert.
