You are holding in your hands a remarkable treatise on everything about you becoming a stronger, more effective chess player, authored by one of the best writers ever - CJS Purdy. The lasting mark this Australian left with chess players, through articles like the ones in this book, contain some of the most thoughtful, useful and entertaining examples ever to come from a chess master's pen for average players - and he wasn't afraid of disagreewith the established chess authorities either!
CJS Purdy spent much of his life "searching for perfection" concerning his favorite game. In 1953 he attained a form of that perfection when he became the world's first correspondence chess champion. Besides being a profound thinker he was also an excellent teacher. Purdy died in 1979.

Comments on the first edition (compiled and edited as "His Life, His Games, and His Writings" by John Hammond & Robert Jamieson) :
"...this book offers more key advice and instructional punch than a dozen other books sitting on a bookstore's shelf. Purdy's ability to communicate with the average player (a rare skill!) puts him at the forefront of chess teachers. If you're in that D-A grouping, you will be delighted with Purdy's "Search For Chess Perfection."
- Jeremy Silman
"I especially enjoy the link to Amazon where you can find used copies for only $150 :) *That* must be an idea for a cover blurb - republishing a book that has sold for as high as $150 used!
- Don Aldrich
"The volume above [SFCP], when originally published, received a ringing endorsement from none other than Bobby Fischer. And no wonder; we are given various articles on the opening, middlegame and the ending; we are shown how to decide on a move, how to reduce blunders, and through it ll, we understand that Purdy's advice really works. And we also see the human side of Purdy - he didn't always take his own advice!"
- Bob Webb
"Hands down. One of the top 5 of all time. The care you (TPI) put in producing the volume, combined with the quality of the writing, puts it up there as one of my favorite books ever!
- Jeff Jackson
