Among the great players in chess history, there is one name which stands out with an aura of invincibility, Tigran Petrosian, World Chess Champion from 1963-69. For long periods of his career, which ended with his untimely death in 1984, Petrosian was considered almost unbeatable, thanks to his remarkable defensive qualities and iron will. However, Petrosian was capable of the most astoundingly subtle games, which other Grandmasters could only marvel at. When drawn into a tactical fight he consistently proved that he was the equal of any Champion, although it was not in the nature of the man to provoke complications where simple solutions would provide the same result.
In this collection Peter Clarke has selected sixty games from 1946 to 1963, covering Petrosian's career from his schoolboy days in Soviet Georgia through to the pinnacle of his career, his victory over Botvinnik to become World Champion in 1963. Of course, there are many defensive masterpieces to be found, but the book also reveals Petrosian's outstanding endgame technique and his sharp eye for tactical opportunities when they arose.
