Preface
I had a chance to visit the European Congress held in Russia in the summer of 2003. And I was very impressed to see the passion for Baduk of European players. For the two weeks of the congress period, they played Baduk, recorded the games and reviewed their games with sincerity. They have a love for Baduk irrespective of their ability. And it gave high hopes that in the near future many people over the world would enjoy Baduk without any relation to race and nationality.
For all that hopeful expectation, in western countries the environment for promoting the spread of Baduk by Baduk dubs was so poor that it disappointed me. Some of the poorer elements include Baduk teachers, Baduk books and Baduk appliances. Especially the thirst for good Baduk books was very high. So I thought that it would be very helpful if we wrote both in English and Korean when writing Baduk books. At that time I had already made an English version of a Baduk book for beginners and decided to make more Baduk books in English to help those people who want to learn Baduk.
Beginner's series of Baduk (English version) comprising three volumes and this book will reach out to western Baduk players and I anticipate that these books could be a little clue (answer) to relieve their thirst for Baduk knowledge. In the future various Korean Baduk books in English will be provided as an ongoing project.
This book will comprise three volumes. The main purpose of this book is to help Baduk players to satisfy their curiosity for Jung-seok and Po-seok (Fuseki) in the opening part. This book was based on the study of professional players in Korea and tried to make the explanation simple. I hope this book can be of help for those people who want to study Baduk seriously.
I thank Chang-Sam Cho the president of OroMedia for his full support for my idea to spread Baduk by providing good Baduk books in an English version. I also thank Seong-June Kim who translated into English. Finally I thank all who helped me to publish this book.
