In learning to play go, it is essential to first lay a solid foundation in solving issues of life and death. As the entire game is full of such issues, the reasons for doing so are self-evident. This requires learning to read out sequences as well as possible.
We have presented here 114 problems to help amateurs better understand and master key points in resolving a variety of life and death situations. The selected examples present basic life and death problems as well as some tesuji problems of the sort often encountered in games. Through studying these problems, your skill in attacking and capturing in actual games will be enhanced.
The 114 problems are classified into three levels: elementary, intermediate, and advanced. The solutions are all on the reverse side. We encourage readers to study and complete the problems before looking at the solutions. In doing so, you will not only find progress and improvement a realizable goal, but also discover that the benefits of the game are far more than expected.
