"Invasion" in go, uchikomi in Japanese, is a direct attack inside the opponent's intended terroritory. The aim is to deprive the opponent of area that has not yet been fully defended. This usually involves placing a stone inside the opponent's formation that you must save in order to succeed in the attack, either by running out or by living inside the opponent's position. Sometimes the initial invading stone can be used as a sacrifice to gain benefits. That is, an invasion can sometimes turn into a reducing move (keshi in Japanese), though reducing moves normally press on the opponent's position from the outside. In this volume the focus is on direct invasions. Reducing moves will be the subject of a separate book.
