Thus, I must stress that my book should also be interesting for those who just enjoy chess in general, not just for the fans of this line seeking new ideas! Of course, you don’t need to memorize everything to be able to play the variation successfully. Longer lines merely tend to be examples of how the game might develop, which help to enhance your understanding.
I hope my book will attract a lot of chess players of all levels and that we will soon see many more new games in this fascinating variation in practice!

Eine “1.e4 e5”-Eröffnung sollte man als Schwarzer schon spielen können. Nur welche? Saizew-Spanier oder Breyer? Schliemann als Überraschung oder Tschigorin, und wenn: welche Art von Tschigorin? Petrosian oder Romanischin? Soll man den hyperkonkreten Marshall-Angriff wählen und ausgetretene Theoriepfaden bis ins Endspiel folgen oder will man eher eine praktische, unkonkrete Variante spielen? Überlegungen dieser Art kann man auch in dem empfehlenswerten Schmöker-Band “How to Out-Prepare your Opponent” von Jeroen Bosch finden.
Vor zehn, fünfzehn Jahren hatte die Archangelsk-Variante eine Auferstehung erlebt. Anand, Svidler, Shirov, Nakamura, Gashimov, Navara und viele andere spielten die schwarze Seite des Spaniers mit 5 ... b5 und 6 ... Lc5, und lange davor hatten Beljawski und sein Trainer Michaltschitschin ein schönes Bändchen über diese Variante veröffentlicht. In Berliner Kreisen machte Freerk Bulthaupt in den Neunzigern auf diese Variante aufmerksam.
Der ungarische Großmeister Viktor Erdos hat ein Buch über die moderne Behandlung der Archangelsk-Variante veröffentlicht. Es steckt sehr viel Arbeit drin - und gerade jene, die noch nicht auf den webbasierten Move-Trainer-Zug aufspringen möchten, finden in diesem Band aus dem Hause Thinkers Publishing eine willkommene Abwechslung und die Gelegenheit, die Varianten mit Brett und Figuren zu studieren.
